The sparrows
Were chirping excitedly
In the courtyard
Their cheerful melodies
Drowning out the sounds
Of the Toronto traffic
The usual downtown chaos
Barely audible, lost
In the background
Of their sweet performance
While a light sprinkling of snow
Was still softly falling, adorning
The strings of brightly coloured lights
On the festively decorated patio
Where we first kissed
Their birdsong enchanting
Transforming that early Winter morning
Into a peaceful Norman Rockwell setting
The joy of the holiday season
And true sentiment of Christmas
Captured for me there
In the symphony
Of the visiting sparrows
As I surveyed the parking lot
For the words of their poem to arrive
Feeling most grateful
For the gift of you
On the unforgettable morning
That had begun
The longest night of the year
