Lilac trees

Wild And Purple

The wild purple lilacs
That had been blooming
In abundance
Just last weekend
Had already begun fading
Their fragrant blossoms
Always so spectacularly short-lived
Like the forsythia bushes
In bloom beside them
Already being replaced with
The dark green leaves
Expanding on their branches
Their brief appearance
And provocative scent having
Graced the countryside
And landscapes everywhere
For those first few warm days spent
Weeding and tilling the garden beds,
Preparing the patios, yards and decks
For the long-awaited months
Of summer sunshine and warmth
And it was her favourite time of year
When she would head outside
And immerse herself happily
In the intoxicatingly sweet aroma
Of the lilacs as they welcomed in
The promise of spring
